The ruminant stomach has four chambers. In the first two chambers, the rumen and the reticulum, the food is mixed with saliva and separates into layers of solid and liquid material. Solids form the cud, which is then regurgitated and chewed to break it down further. Cellulose is broken down further still by microbes before it leaves the last two chambers.
